Carpenter ants do not eat wood like termites do. They excavate the wood and nest inside.

“Frass” is what we call the wood shavings left when Carpenter ants are excavating out nests from solid wood. In this case, the wood was the subflooring and the floor joists in the sub-structure crawl space area of a house.
